Spring analysis

All researchers who have investigated the effects of medicinal waters have been interested in learning to which components the medicinal waters owe their special properties. Such analyses of Leukerbad's springs were not made until the 18th century.

While in the Middle Ages it was believed that copper ore, vitriol, gold and limestone were the effective elements of the medicinal springs, in 1715 an analysis revealed that the water contained sulphur. Subsequently, owing to improved chemical methods, it became possible to analyse the springs in a systematic manner. These analyses were repeated every 20-30 years and the old results were revised and completed.
